ISSHO IZAKAYA
(Spirit Of Design Analogy Pte Ltd)
The Japanese are known to be very steadfast in the preservation of their culture and have a deep respect for nature. Hence it is no wonder that our design team at Spirit Of Design Analogy Pte Ltd (SODA) reached an unanimous decision to draw upon traditional Japanese design element for Issho Izakaya located at Singapore’s Kallang Wave Mall.
Issho Izakaya is envisioned as the place for patrons to chill-out while enjoying authentic Japanese food and drinks. Hence, they try to set the mood for patrons to mingle and settled upon and outdoor seating area overlooking the Kallang River. Japanese design elements inspired by tatami, kimono and graphic art are incorporated throughout the store and there is no mistaking the strong Japanese identity. However, while the traditional design elements provided the inspiration, the team took careful measures to inject contemporary interpretation to these classic elements to cater to its younger target market.
Bamboos are used to separate the outdoor seating and public walkways to bring a dash of green to the fa?ade. Diners walk past the row of bamboo to reach the main entrance that gives off a subtle touch of Zen. The top of the entrance is taken up by a wooden beam and the signboard is place right in the middle and clever use of lights making it the center of attraction.
Modifying the glass wall was out the equation as it is considered part of the mall infrastructure. They decided to insert light color wood strips behind the glass wall to create a more private and cozy atmosphere while carrying on the nature loving theme. Enter the room restaurant and be immediately greeted with seating inspired by the zashiki style commonly found in Japan, but tweaked into a more conventional style for the locals. Even the zabuton (sitting mattress) have been given a twist by incorporating a backrest covered in traditional Japanese prints.
The chef bar area is given special attention (after all, izakaya literally means Japanese bar) and like many such establishments, diners can choose to sit around the bar. Strips of dark wood provide the perfect condiments to admire the chef’s well-honed techniques and the wooden ceiling hanging lights surrounding the bar completes the stage-like atmosphere. Illustration depicting the traditional Kyoto elements at the upper section brings a dash of playfulness to the mix.
The three VIP rooms are distinguished by designs reminiscences of traditional Japanese family crest and the fabrics used at the room were designed with collaboration with a kimono master to create the desired cross between the old and the new.
